Pancreatitis refers to inflammation of the pancreas. This disease, which can be caused by many factors, has many symptoms. This disease requires immediate medical treatment. This disease occurs when pancreatic enzymes (especially trypsin) needed for digestion become active in the pancreas instead of being activated in the small intestine. It can be a sudden, severe disease that occurs within a few days (acute pancreatitis) or a chronic disease that occurs over many years (chronic pancreatitis).

Signs and symptoms

  • Severe burning pain in the epigastrium or upper left part of the stomach, radiating to the back
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting that gets worse after eating
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Fever
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Jaundice
  • Weight loss

What is the pancreas?

Types of pancreatitis

  • Acute pancreatitis: Can be cured in a short time.
  • Chronic pancreatitis: Prolonged inflammation and its associated effects over many years.

Symptoms of acute pancreatitis

Causes of acute pancreatitis

Gallstones: The cause of most acute pancreatitis.

High cholesterol: If you have high triglycerides in the blood.

Alcoholism: People who drink a lot of alcohol are more likely to develop it.

Autoimmune pancreatitis: The body’s immune system attacks the pancreas.

Accidents: In case of injury to the abdomen.

Cystic fibrosis: a genetic disease.

Medications: Estrogen, corticosteroids, and some antibiotics.
